Oct 26, 2016 (newstodate): The Latvian ACMI and charter carrier SmartLynx Airlines is deepening its engagement in Southeast Asia with new contracts in Vietnam.
The carrier has thus signed an ACMI wet-lease agreement with Vietjet Aviation JSC comprising two Airbus A320 aircraft to operate from Noi Bai International Airport, Vietnam, starting from January 2017.
SmartLynx is however already present in the Vietnamese market with an ACMI damp lease agreement with Jetstar Pacific Airlines JSC since May 2016, comprising one Airbus A320 aircraft based at Ho Chi Minh Airport, Vietnam.
In the fleet of SmartLynx are 12 Airbus A320 aircraft and, from May 2016, one Airbus 321, allocated to flights in Europe, Asia and Africa.
Alongside the ACMI and lease operations, SmartLynx will be offering flights to 12 destinations from Riga and Tallinn during the coming winter schedule.
These flights are operated in cooperation with tour operators in the Baltic region including Novatours, Tez Tour and Aurinko, but flights will also be offered to other tour operators including Thomas Cook and the TUI Group.
Based at Riga Airport, SmartLynx Airlines was acquired by the Icelandair Group in 2006, but was put up for sale in 2011 as the Icelandair Group formulated the strategy of returning to core business, and found new a owner after a management buy-out.
In 2016, a Netherlands-based investment fund became the owner of the company, thereby ensuring a greater financial capacity for fleet enlargement and expansion of its operations, becoming a collaboration partner of new European and Asian airlines in the field of ACMI.
The new CEO as of June 2016 is Zygimantas Surintas.
