Oct 05, 2016 (newstodate): Even before the completion of the construction of a new second terminal at Kazakhstan's Astana International Airport, needs for planning an entirely new airport are on the agenda.
The airport has reached its ceiling with a current annual capacity at 3.6 mio passengers, and with the completion of the second terminal, now underway, capacity will rise to 8.2 mio passengers annually.
Expectations are, however, that this capacity will be exhausted already by 2022-23, after which the construction of a third terminal will be needed to handling of up to 15 mio passengers.
After that all space will be fully utilized, calling for construction of an entirely new airport to serve the country's capital and the expected rise in transit traffic between Europe and Asia.
The airport has only one 3,400 m runway, and needs for a second runway to be constructed are also being evaluated.
