Oct 03, 2016 (newstodate): Denmark's Billund Airport saw its cargo volumes in September 2016 continuing the recent positive trend.
A total of 5,981 tonnes of cargo was handled at the airport, an increase by 10.4 percent, bringing the total so far into 2016 to 48,100 tonnes, up 1.7 percent, y-o-y.
While export volumes in September remained stable with a five percent increase to 3,809 tonnes, the growth was driven by a 21.1 percent rise in imports to 2,172 tonnes, reflecting a generally sound trend in the Danish economy.
During January-September 2016, the airport handled 30,950 tonnes of imports, down 0.7 percent, y-o-y, and 17,150 tonnes of imports, up 6.3 percent.
Boding well for the continued growth in volumes at Billund Airport is Turkish Cargo's recently announced decision to add a second frequency to its freighter service to Billund Airport from the start of this winter schedule.
While the existing Sunday operation since April 10, 2016, will remain a dedicated flight between Billund and Istanbul with an Airbus A310-300F freighter wet-leased from ULS Airlines Cargo, the coming new Thursday flight will be shared with Amsterdam on a routing Istanbul-Amsterdam-Billund-Istanbul, operated with Turkish Cargo's own Airbus A330-200F aircraft.
