Oct 25, 2016 (newstodate): A large proportion of Finnair's pilot corps is undergoing training for the growing fleet of Airbus A350 aircraft - and this calls for temporary measures to cover up for the shortfall of available man power.
As one result, Finnair is to wet-lease one Airbus A340-300 aircraft from the Portuguese charter carrier and ACMI provider Hi Fly.
The Hi Fly aircraft will operate on Finnair's Helsinki-New York route between November 3, 2016 and January 8, 2017, and while cockpit and cabin crew comes from Hi Fly, the flights will have two Finnair service crew members on board to support the delivery of Finnair's customer service concept.
Finnair has placed orders for a total of 19 new A350-900, and if Airbus manages to stick to the anticipated delivery schedule, Finnair will have 11 A350 aircraft by the end of 2017 and 19 by the end of 2023.
The delivery on September 29, 2016, of the airline's seventh Airbus A350 completed the delivery schedule for 2016, and the first delivery in 2017 is now slated for Q1.
In the Nordic region both SAS, Air Greenland and Norwegian have been customers for Hi Fly's Airbus aircraft on temporary contracts.
