Jan 29, 2016 (newstodate): The steep decline in Russia's aviation industry due to sanctions and economic deflation is leading to a growing excess of aircraft capacity.
According to figures from Russia's Research Institute of Civil Aviation, Russian airlines took delivery of 123 new aircraft annually during 2008-2014, but last year only 59 new aircraft were delivered.
Also in 2015, Russian airlines reduced their total fleet of aircraft by 235 units, now operating only 753 passenger aircraft including 206 regional aircraft, which is the lowest level in the last ten years.
Expectations are that the fleet will be further reduced after the coming summer season marked by mainly domestic leisure travels.
