Jan 19, 2016 (newstodate): Russia's Voronezh Airport has opened for cargo flights, with Uzbekistan Airways as is first airline customer.
The beginning is modest, however, as Uzbekistan Airways so far plans to call only once a week at the airport with a Boeing 767-300F that carried 47.3 tonnes of cargo on its first flight on January 16, 2016.
Voronezh Airport may however have an immediate future in cargo as the airport may serve as a gateway for imports of Central Asian products, notably perishables, increasingly replacing earlier imports of Turkish commodities before the enforcement of the Russian embargo.
So far, cargo operations with aircraft like the Boeing 767-300F are permitted only on an ad-hoc basis s the airport is still to be certified to larger cargo aircraft, a process expected to be finalized already during H1 2016.
Voronezh Airport has one 2,600m runway, with RusLine as its only current airline customer after the demise of Polet.
