Jan 29, 2016 (newstodate): Lithuania has an excess of airports - and this calls for innovative thinking and new ways to raise the rate of utilization of the airport resources.
-On one hand we have put the management of all three international airport under a single holding state-owned company, Lithuanian Airports. On the other hand we are now implementing a new incentives scheme to spur airlines to operate into not just one, but two or all three airports, says Gediminas Almantas, Lithuanian Airports CEO.
-The incentives scheme is rather simple: if you operate into just the capital Vilnius Airport, no discount on charges apply. If you operate in Kaunas or Palanga as well, you will get a 20 percent reduction of airport charges, and a 30 percent discount will apply if you operate into all three airports.
-Now, actual airport charges differ from airport to airport, with Vilnius Airport being the most expensive. If you operate into just Vilnius Airport, your over-all charges will lower significantly if you add flights into one, or both, of the other Lithuanian airports.
-The message has been clearly received by airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air that will now operate into all three airports, adding flights to Palanga in 2016, while SAS, airBaltic and Norwegian are operating at both Vilnius and Palanga. With these responses, one-third of the Lithuanian scheduled air services market is now comprised by the new incentive scheme.
-By these means, we are realizing also the key strategic goal for Lithuanian Airports which is increasing the connectivity of Lithuania in the marketplace to the benefit of both business and tourism, says Mr Almantas.
