Sep 02, 2015 (newstodate): Russia's two largest airlines are to be merged, forming the country's dominating aviation business and one of the world's largest airline conglomerates.
According to Russian media, Aeroflot has placed a bid to take over the majority of the equity in the privately-owned airline Transaero in response to the general decline in the Russian economy that is taking a heavy toll on the aviation market as well where total passenger numbers fell by 2.3 percent in this year's Q1.
According to a release, Aeroflot will take 75 percent plus one of the shares in Transaero that will thus become a company in the Aeroflot Group after a reconstruction.
After the tie-up, the joint carrier will account for more than half of all Russian air passengers.
Together, the two carriers dispose of a fleet of 161 aircraft with Aeroflot livery, and 97 in Transaero's colors.
