Sep 23, 2015 (newstodate): Air passenger volumes in Russia increased by 1.8 percent, y-o-y, during the first eight months of 2015.
Beneath the growth, several traits are now pointing to significant changes in the underlying patterns.
The over-all growth was driven by air travel on domestic flights, up 16.1 percent, while passenger volumes on international flights dropped 9.5 percent.
Volumes of passengers on international flights by Russian carriers were down 5.7 percent, and Russian passengers on international carriers' international services dropped even further by 18.9 percent.
The increase in passenger volumes on domestic flights by Russian carriers also demonstrates that Russians increasingly spend their holidays at Russian leisure destinations rather than going abroad also due to the depreciation of the Russian Ruble.
Another trend is that the airports in the Moscow region are now growing their common share of Russia's air passenger volumes as international traffic to and from regional airports in Russia is declining.
One factor driving this is the decision by most Western airlines to suspend services from regional airports while still maintaining, at best, air services to airports around Moscow forcing Russian travelers to international destinations to transfer via hubs around Moscow including the airports of Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo.
