Sep 14, 2015 (newstodate): Two Swedish citizens are behind a new project to spur airlines to accept carriage of refugees to seek asylum in Europe.
In 2001, the EU laid down rules on carrier liability that made airlines responsible for the costs of returning any passengers arriving at a destination without a valid visa or similar travel documents. If the person is denied rights as a valid asylum seeker at the point of entrance to a country, this will trigger the return process that keeps airlines from accepting this class of passenger on flights.
The project named Refugee Air will collect funds to compensate airlines from these costs in cases where refugees on board are denied entrance into a country and prone to being returned.
Refugee Air also plans to charter aircraft to lift refugees and migrants into Sweden from today's hot-spots and disaster areas.
Funds will be generated through crowd-funding via facebook.
