Sep 07, 2015 (newstodate): After the failure by Air Lituanica to set up a Lithuanian carrier, the focus is on the issue of building a strong airport infrastructure in Lithuania to provide a sound basis for growth in provision of air traffic.
-We are now in the process of shortlisting candidates for consultancy to support the efforts to privatize the Lithuanian Airports through a tender process, says Arijandas Sliupas, Vice Minister Transport and Communications.
-Alongside this process we are also preparing the documentation concerning the future tender process including the necessary legal framework and changes in the current legislation which is brought to the government for decision.
-I expect these processes to be concluded around Christmas, and if everything works according to plans a tender process for the concession to operate and manage the state-owned company Airports of Lithuanian will be opened around March 2016.
-A focal point in the tender requirements will be participants' ability to develop traffic at our airports. We do not foresee any new projects for establishing a Lithuanian airline, so the emphasis will be on operating and managing our airports in such a way as to attract more airlines and traffic to serve our country, says Mr Sliupas.
Since July 1, 2014, the three international airports of Lithuania have come under one single juridical entity, State Enterprise Lithuanian Airports managing the airports of Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga.
