Sep 04, 2015 (newstodate): e-freight is indeed moving in Lithuania as in other Baltic and world markets. But it takes time...
-One thing is that an airline may proudly claim that it is now 100 percent e-freight and paperless, but in practice the situation is probably much more complex than conveyed by a press release, says Olegas Kairys, BALT-Cargo managing director.
-One important thing is that a full implementation of the process builds on the mind-set of people involved. It takes time to get fully dedicated to paperless procedures, and maybe younger staff may be more ready to accept the challenge. But even so, shippers may require a paper to verify the status of the transaction, and some forwarders may still ask the handling agent to fill in the stamp on security.
-Another thing is that most often, even if we are actually going with an electronic AWB we still accompany the shipments with some copies of the AWB in case some inspector at some destination may require this.
-We cannot be sure of the actual day-to-day status of e-freight readiness at all stations around the world and we do not want any delays in the chain of transportation due to issues of paperless or not paperless...
-For our part, we at BALT-Cargo are fully capable of handling the e-AWB in all cases where forwarders and airlines are up and running, says Mr Kairys.
