Sep 08, 2015 (newstodate): The drastically changed market situation is reflected in declining cargo loads on the Latvian carrier airBaltic.
-Currently, volumes are down by about 24 percent compared to last year. Steep falls in currencies of a number of our eastern neighbors are clearly contributing to that, and for instance Moscow airports reported a 25 percent drop in international mail and 12 percent in international freight volumes, says Toms Andersons, airBaltic Cargo Manager.
-This is to be the trend of this year, for sure. We are naturally based on west-east trade routes, so this will probably continue for a while.
-Of course we are exploring other opportunities for utilizing our cargo capacities. As you know, we just started number of direct flights from Vilnius, in Lithuania, and I hope that these new markets will help us remedy the situation, says Mr Andersons.
According to Riga Airport statistics, airBaltic cargo accounted for about 38 percent of the airport's total of 10,500 tonnes of cargo handled in January-July 2015, which was down 53.7 percent, y-o-y.
