Aug 20, 2015 (newstodate): Following a US court ruling in June 2015, implying that the tender for servicing the Thule Air Force Base at Qaanaaq, housing the US Air Force, must be re-opened, the issue has now found a temporary solution.
Greenland Contractors will thus have its contract extended by one year, from September 2015, opening up for a fresh assessment of the issue pending a decision on the long-term future of servicing the US Air Force Base.
Following the earlier tender process ending November 2014, Greenland Contractors would be replaced with the US-owned company Vectrus' Danish subsidiary Exelis Services from September 2015 till September 2022.
According to an international agreement, only Danish and Greenlandic companies may bid on contracts for operating the polar base.
The issue raised strong objections, however, as many local jobs would be lost and Greenland would lose much-needed income.
A new tender will eventually be opened to determine the future provider of services at the out-lying base.
