Aug 12, 2015 (newstodate): The Turkish cargo carrier ULS Airlines is still active with cargo flights between Istanbul and Tallinn Airport, in Estonia, but on a limited scale compared to earlier years.
The carrier is now basically operating only two weekly Airbus A310-300F flights from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Tallinn, carrying ex-China shipments destined for the Russian and other markets and transferred by truck for onward transportation.
Serving ULS Airlines in Estonia is Essenta Logistics, managed by Toomas Orukivi.
-As always, summer is a quiet season but even more so these days, and 2015 has seen traffic and volumes not exceeding the levels from 2014, says Mr Orukivi.
-It is hardly a secret that the current political issues between Russia and the EU takes a heavy toll on our service, but at least ULS Airlines is still present in the market.
-While the ULS flights bring in imports only, we have invested much efforts in setting up sales of capacity on the outgoing flights as well, but this never succeeded. Now, with only two weekly flights the service is less attractive and as ULS Airlines changes the actual flight times at short notices it would also be difficult for us to sell the product anyway. Also freight forwarders traditionally want their shipments to go to Istanbul Ataturk Airport rather than Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport despite the fact that there is only 60 km between these two airports.
-But we have certainly not given up hope for future possibilities and are remain happy that ULS Airlines stays at Tallinn even during these difficult times, says Mr Orukivi.
Until relatively few years ago, ULS Airlines operated 35-40 monthly freighters from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Tallinn Airport carrying shipments destined for the Russian market.
