Aug 06, 2015 (newstodate): The Swedish civil aviation regulator, Transportstyrelsen has banned Iraqi Airways from operating flights into the country.
The carrier's license has been revoked with immediate effect due to flaws detected in its safety systems.
The Swedish decision comes after EASA denied to issue a Third Country Operator Authorization to Iraqi Airways on July 16, 2015, which is required for airlines to operate within EU airspace.
Until now, Iraqi Airways has been operating flights between Stockholm Arlanda and Baghdad, Najaf and Erbil in Iraq.
Sweden has a significant population of ethnic Iraqis, and many passengers are now stuck in Iraq unable to fly back to Sweden on return tickets issued by the carrier.
Last year 18,329 people flew in and out of Sweden with Iraqi Airways.
