Aug 13, 2015 (newstodate): The air has been cleared for a future resumption of air services between Latvia and Tajikistan.
Ministers from the two countries have had the issue on the agenda during a recent meeting, resulting in a protocol comprising several issues of cooperation including the use of transit potentials between the two countries, a resumption of air services as well as the use of Latvia's seaport for loading and unloading of rail cargo to and from Tajikistan.
As the first airline in the EU to offer direct non-stop connections to Tajikistan, the Latvian carrier airBaltic first launched flights on the route between Riga and Dushanbe on June 1,2009, with two weekly rotations using Boeing 737 aircraft.
From October 1, 2010, the airline however suspended flights to Tajikistan in connection with the transition to winter schedule and a shortage of aircraft, resuming the operation again from 2011 but eventually pulled out from the route in 2012.
It remains to be seen if airBaltic sees a business case with flights between Latvia and Tajikistan.
