Jul 29, 2015 (newstodate): The unification since 2014 of Lithuania's airport structure through a state-owned holding company for the joint management of the three state-owned airports of Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga may now take a further step.
According to a Lithuanian media, the country's Vice Minister of Transport and Communication, Arijandas Sliupas has aired his intentions of finalizing preparations for the opening of a tender later this year for new investors to take over the management and ownership of the three airports, possibly from 2016 already.
More surprisingly, the media also quotes Mr Sliupas for saying at a meeting with the Lithuanian Business Confederation that "In general, there is no need for new airports in Lithuania. In the future, the Vilnius airport could be turned into a residential area, since it is not technically possible to make the airport's runway longer and the airport will not be able to meet the needs of the country. The Kaunas airport would be sufficient to Lithuania, however, the speed train project from Kaunas to Vilnius should be implemented together."
As Mr Sliupas is currently on vacation, newstodate has not yet been able to verify these quotations.
