Jul 29, 2015 (newstodate): Ukraine and USA have now signed an open skies agreement eliminating government interference in the commercial decisions of carriers about routes, capacity, and pricing.
As the only Ukrainian carrier currently operating non-stop scheduled flights connecting Ukraine and the USA, UIA intends to seize the new opportunities to extend its route network in the US.
Flights between Kiev and New York were launched by the Ukrainian carrier Aerosvit on March 30, 2003, but the carrier went bankrupt and out of service from January 2013.
The North Atlantic flights were later taken over by Ukraine International Airlines since April 25, 2014.
Ukraine was downgraded from Category I to Category II by FAA in 2005, prohibiting the country's airlines to fly on new routes with aircraft registered in Ukraine, but Category i status was returned in June 2013.
Ukraine now pins its hopes on landing also the eventual signing of the Agreement on Common Aviation Area between Ukraine and the European Union after a lengthy period of negotiations that were launched already in 2007.
