Jul 28, 2015 (newstodate): Starting from early September, with the exact launch date and schedule yet to be announced, Finnair and IAG Cargo will team up behind a joint freighter service between London Luton Airport and Helsinki Airport.
The two parties will jointly use the 43 tonnes cargo capacity on a DHL Airbus A300-600 freighter offering enhanced transfer options between Finnair's Asian cargo and IAG Cargo's primarily North American cargo.
By this new cooperation, Finnair Cargo will add London as its third cargo hub, after the main hub at Helsinki and Brussels that was opened in April 2013 to serve not least the pharma industries.
The creation of the new cargo bridge, which will connect the two carrier's networks, is an important strategic move for Finnair Cargo. enabling the opening of numerous new destinations in North America in addition to its current routes.
Opening up its third European cargo hub also allows Finnair Cargo to greatly expand its market reach beyond its small home market, crucial to build up cargo volumes to fill its coming fleet of 19 Airbus A350 XWB Aircraft.
The new freighter service will operate twice-weekly and add main-deck capacity to Finnair's currently seven and BA's two daily narrow-body flights between Helsinki and London, and a trucking service will be set up to connect the two London airports at Heathrow and Luton.
