Jun 23, 2015 (newstodate): To compete with the launch of no less than two Airbus A320 P2F program, Boeing has now announced the start of a program to convert Boeing 737 NG aircraft to freighters.
Driving the project is GECAS, the aviation leasing and financing arm of GE, announcing the launch of its 737-800NG passenger-to-freighter conversion program.
GECAS plans to convert up to 20 of its Boeing 737-800NG passenger aircraft to freighters.
AEI Aeronautical Engineers will perform the conversions at its facilities in the U.S. and China. The first aircraft is scheduled for conversion starting in 2016 in order to earn FAA supplemental type certification in 2017 and subsequently enter service as a leased freighter.
The Boeing 737-800 is a stretched version of the 737-700, competing head-on with Airbus A320 in the passenger aircraft market.
So far, no details on the capacity of the planned Boeing 737-800SF have been released.
