Jun 22, 2015 (newstodate): First opened in the 1970-ies, Russia's Kaluga Grabtsevo Airport, in the Kaluga region, is now preparing for start of international services after a loooong break.
The airport ceased operations in 2001 due to lack of financial means, but in 2009 ownership was transferred from the federal to the regional government, which opened up for new investments including reconstruction of the 2,200 m runway, new taxiways, aircraft parking stands, and a renovated passenger terminal.
The Chinese company Petro-Hehua won the tender for redeveloping the airport.
Besides Volkswagen, Citroen, Mitsubishi, Volvo and Peugeot have also invested heavily in the area that houses over 60 major production facilities and dozens of medium-sized companies generating a need for air services to Europe and the world.
The airport is now hoping to attract Russian carriers to set up traffic to European and leisure destinations, and Komaviatrans has already opened scheduled traffic from June 16, 2015, to St Petersburg and Sochi from the airport
