Jun 25, 2015 (newstodate): Plans may be underway for merging China's three leading cargo carriers Air China Cargo, China Cargo Airlines and China Southern Cargo.
At least that was reported by the official Xinhua news agency, quoting CAAC deputy director Zhou Laizhen.
If carried through, the merged company would become Asia's largest airfreight carrier.
The Xinhua story was, however, immediately denied by CAAC that claims that Mr Zhou actually did not give any interviews at all on the day quoted.
In effect, such a move would pertain not to CAAC but to China's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, referring to the State Council.
In any case, even if the timing of the news was not comfortable, the cat is out of the sack.
In the fleet of Air China Cargo are 14 freighters including seven Boeing 747-400F, two Boeing 757-200F and six Boeing 777F. China Cargo Airlines counts 12 freighters including four Boeing 747-400F, six Boeing 777F and two Boeing 757-200F, and China Southern Cargo adds another nine Boeing 777F freighters.
