Jun 19, 2015 (newstodate): Having been restricted in developing new routes and flights after the EU Commission's approval of the state loan securing its survival, LOT may breathe freely again from January 1, 2016.
It is now expected that the airline will shortly announce a new strategy including new route openings, and some news has already been published to indicate a fresh start.
Latest news is thus that the carrier will launch flights from Warsaw to Tokyo Narita Airport from January 13, 2016, offering three weekly rotations on the route to be served with Boeing 787 aircraft.
LOT has also announced that flights, currently suspended, will resume again from January 1, 2016, to Belgrade, Chisinau, Yerevan and Zagreb.
Under the current restructuring program, LOT has reduced the number of routes, reduced over-all capacity, and cut down on staff and costs.
LOT thus fared better than Hungary's Malev that was denied of EU approval of the state intervention, causing the carrier to declare bankruptcy in 2012 as this would require it to repay the state aid.
