Jun 03, 2015 (newstodate): According to Lithuanian media, the company managing the commercial activities at the country's Siauliai Airport has been declared bankrupt.
The company, Siauliu oro uostas was set up in November 2003 by Siauliai City Municipality Council as a public limited company to provide commercial passenger and cargo air transportation services at the airport that belongs to the Defense Ministry and is thus not part of the unified management plc comprising the airports of Vilnius, Palanga and Kanuas.
So far, the main business of the commercial company has been in air cargo as well as low-cost passenger flights.
The airport was a Russian air base during the cold war period, but has been comprehensively renovated and modernized as part of an EU infrastructure project and officially inaugurated in 1997 as Siauliai International Airport.
The airport is now primarily serving as a NATO base with contingents of NATO military aircraft supporting the monitoring of the Baltic air space.
