Jun 16, 2015 (newstodate): In July 2015, Liepaja Airport, 210 km west of Riga, will complete the long process of airport reconstruction works and ready itself for certification.
-The current reconstruction has comprised renovation of the 2,002 m runway, widening of the single taxiway, construction of the apron accommodating three C-class aircraft parking stands, installation of new airfield lighting systems, and drainage of the runway and taxiway, says Agris Sprude, Liepaja Airport director.
-The next step will be to prepare documentation to apply to Latvia's CAA for certification of the airport. This application will be delivered by October 2015, and we then expect the certification to be granted after some five months, meaning that Liepaja Airport will open for commercial traffic in spring 2016.
-At this stage there are no concrete negotiations with airline operators, but we do of course hope also to attract the attention of the Latvian carrier airBaltic that has earlier been operating at the airport, says Mr Sprude.
In 2007, airBaltic launched services from Liepaja Airport to Hamburg and Copenhagen and the now-defunct Russian carrier Atlant-Soyuz operated flights from 2008 between Liepaja and Moscow.
