Jun 30, 2015 (newstodate): Finnair will today mark the transition from project to realization of a new cargo terminal at Helsinki Vanta Airport.
The cornerstone of the new facility will be laid at an official event with the presence of Finnair CEO Pekka Vauramo and the company's CCO Juha Jarvinen who was named Managing Director of the carrier's cargo companies Finnair Cargo Ltd. and Finnair Cargo Terminal Operations Ltd. as of May 14, 2012 and promoted to his current position and a member of Finnair's Executive Board as of November 1, 2014.
The 31,000 sq m terminal will be divided into three zones: 25,000 sq m will be dedicated to general cargo handling, and two spaces for temperature-controlled zones, roughly 3,000 sq m each.
The new facility will be commissioned in 2017, ready for handling of the carrier's cargo volumes on the fleet of new Airbus A350 XWB aircraft to be delivered from this autumn.
Talk of a new cargo terminal for Finnair was on the agenda for almost 10 years, with the first project envisaged for commissioning already in 2008.
But the global financial crisis hit hard at visions and the project was stalled until finally confirmed by the Finnair Board in March 2015.
