May 15, 2015 (newstodate): Operator of 46 state-owned airports in Norway, Avinor has embarked on a project for a significant expansion of the infrastructure at Stavanger Airport, to be commissioned by 2018.
The plans comprise the construction of new 5,000 sq m terminal space as well as renovation of another 5,000 sq m in existing facilities in both arrival and check-in areas, and when completed the airport will have the capacity of serving up to six million passengers. The airport will also have a new baggage sorting system.
The first phase of the project will actually be opened already by summer 2015.
Cargo is, however, not mentioned in the project.
-Facilities for cargo handling such as cooling or freezing will depend on projects by private investors that can apply for lease of areas at the airport, as is also the case if operators want to build a hangar at the airport, says Leif Lorentzen, Stavanger Airport airport manager.
-So far we have not had any application for land to set up cargo facilities, he says.
Today, only Lufthansa Cargo operates a weekly freighter with a stop at Stavanger Airport en-route from USA to Frankfurt, but the carrier does see more potentials for the airport in the cargo business.
-In the current situation, I cannot see a major role for Stavanger in the seafood export as there are no terminal facilities for handling of this commodity. If facilities would be built, and if the infrastructure connecting Stavanger to the rest of country through the realization of the E39 Highway project is actually carried through, this would change, Christopher Harneid, Lufthansa Cargo country manager Norway, told newstodate in April 2015.
