May 29, 2015 (newstodate): Poland's Katowice Airport has now officially commissioned its new runway.
The runway construction has been part of a project co-financed by EU funds, with a first phase completed in 2013 comprising the airport' apron area and taxiway system that was expanded and upgraded, while work on construction of the new runway started 2012.
The new 3,200m runway has been constructed in parallel to the existing 2,800m runway and equipped with an ILS Cat II system and new airfield lighting systems. From the start, the runway will, however, only operate as Cat I, until fully certified in 2016.
The new runway started operations on May 28, 2015, and the old 2,800m runway has now been closed down.
Being the fourth-largest in Poland, traffic is rising at the airport that saw passenger volumes up by 12 percent in this year's Q1, to 465,740.
Cargo is also a growing business at Katowice, primarily generated by integrators DHL Express, TNT, UPS and FedEX.
To cope with the increase and preparing for a continued rise in volumes, the airport has started work on construction of a new cargo terminal and other cargo infrastructure, targeting the second half of 2016 for commissioning of the new facilities.
