May 27, 2015 (newstodate): Kazakhstan's Astana International Airport serving the country's capital needs a thorough upgrading of its infrastructure to cope with expected traffic increases.
Following the transfer of the capital from Almaty to Astana in December 1997, the airport underwent a series of major reconstructions which brought it up to international standards, including the current 3,500m runway, and a new passenger terminal was opened in February 2005.
Now the airport needs a rehabilitation of the runway, taxiways and apron as well as upgrade of lighting navigational aids, and EBRD is considering stepping in to support the financing of the projects.
The project will help meet ICAO's safety requirements as well as double the handling capacity of the Astana Airport.
In 2014, the airport handled 2,960,181 passengers, up 13 percent, y-o-y, the volume of flight operations increase by 11 percent, and in addition the airport handled 9,6753 tonnes of cargo, also up 16 percent y-o-y.
