May 8, 2015 (newstodate): Kazakhstan's Astana International Airport is to enter a thorough redevelopment.
The airport hit the capacity ceiling at three million passengers already in 2014, and this has crated the need for new facilities.
In the plans now approved is the construction of a new passenger terminal to lift the capacity to seven million passenger annually.
In the plans are also the reconstruction of the existing 3,500m runway, a new apron area and other pertinent infrastructure.
All works a slated for completion in 2017 with financial support from EBRD.
In 2014, a total of 2,960,181 passengers were handled at the airport, an increase by 13 percent, y-o-y.
International passengers accounted for 1,391,285, up 42 percent, y-o-y, while domestic passenger volumes were up by 38 percent to 1,568,896.
Cargo volumes were also up by 16 percent to 9,653 tonnes including both air cargo and mail shipments.
