May 7, 2015 (newstodate): Cargo is not a money-maker for Finnair as proved by the figures on Q1, 2015.
Compared to Q1, 2014, the volume of ATK was up by 3.3 percent, y-o-y, but RTK dropped 14.6 percent, and in a market with declining rates on the crucial Europe-Asia segment Finnair's cargo revenue measured in cents per kilometer dropped 0.9 percent, from 23.49 to 23.28.
This was in spite of Finnair's decision to end its all-freighter operations by the end of 2014.
Anyhow, Finnair is continuing its focus on the cargo business as demonstrated by the recent decision to invest about 80 million euro in a new cargo terminal at Helsinki, and not least by the introduction of the new Airbus A350 XWB fleet from October 2015, replacing the existing Airbus A340 and A330 fleet to bring down operational costs with the new-generation technologies.
With the full implementation of the 19 Airbus A350 XWB aircraft by 2020, the carrier's cargo capacity will be lifted by 50 percent, compared to the current fleet.
It then remains to be seen how the market will respond to this significant increase in Finnair Cargo's offerings.
