May 1, 2015 (newstodate): Atlantic Airways has signed an MoU with Airbus for purchase of an Airbus 320 to be delivered in late 2016.
The new aircraft will primarily be serving Atlantic Airways' route between the Faroe Islands and Copenhagen that is seeing increasing demand requiring additional capacity compared to the carrier's Airbus A319 currently used on this segment.
There are today three Airbus 319 in the fleet of Atlantic Airways, one owned and two leased.
The leasing contracts for the two aircraft expire in September 2016, but the company plans to extend one of these contracts to secure sufficient capacity until the new aircraft has been acquired and while the new NORTH routes are being built up.
Until the fall of 2016, Atlantic Airways has opted to serve the NORTH routes with an Airbus 319 aircraft as a trial period to gather experience whether it is feasible to acquire a smaller plane to serve these routes.
The company is still researching what type of aircraft is ideal for serving the routes under the NORTH strategy.
Under the current fleet plan comprising the next few years, Atlantic Airways will thus have a fleet consisting of one Airbus 320, one Airbus 319 and an aircraft dedicated to the NORTH routes.
