Apr 28, 2015 (newstodate): Russia's civil aviation is heavily dependent on import of western-made aircraft and aviation technologies.
This fact has raised serious concerns during the current political and economic stress caused by European and US sanctions on Russia.
-Last year, 95 percent of our passenger aircraft were manufactured in the West. We are so dependent on the West, that this situation has passed from being an economic issue to constituting a question of national security, Igor Smirnov, head of the Russian fund Partner of Civil Aviation, told Russian media.
-If suddenly Boeing and Airbus aircraft were put on the sanctions list, we would have to turn to transportation by dog or reindeer sledges.
He also pointed to the fact that even turning to extensive use of Russia's own new regional jet Sukhoi Superjet 100 would be problematic as this aircraft consists to 75 percent of Western-made components and systems.
