Apr 23, 2015 (newstodate): The economic and financial plights of Russia are deepening, making a deep impact on the country's airport industry as well.
On example is the decision by the management of the Caucasus airport Mineralnye Vody to delay the plans for upgrading of the airport's capacity needed to cope with a rise in passenger volumes.
Though no explanation for this decision has been given, financial strains are one most plausible cause.
Plans were to complete an expansion of the airport terminal by spring 2016, but the date has now been pushed back by one year.
The reconstruction of the terminal would more than double the existing area, peak capacity would be raised to 450 international passengers per hour, and the capacity for handling of transit passengers would also be significantly increased to 300 passenger per hour.
In 2014, the airport saw its passenger volume up by 33 percent, with international passengers increasing by 35 percent, y-o-y.
