Apr 08, 2015 (newstodate): Long underway, plans for construction of a new green-field international airport at Saratov, in southern Russia, are now seemingly on the move again.
Already in 2009 plans were on the table for building a new airport to replace the existing Saratov Tsentralny Airport, but then came the full impact of the global financial and economic crisis that put plans back on the shelf.
The new airport, 50 km from the city, will serve as a multimodal air transportation hub for both passsenger and cargo operations at international standards with capability to serve any type of aircraft.
The airport will be designed to the annual capacity of handling 1.3 mio pasengers and 3,900 tonnes of cargo, and hopes are now that construction works may finally start by the end of this summer backed by a new joint state/regional/private consortium.
Prior to that, tenders will be opened to select partners and finalize budgets.
