Apr 15, 2015 (newstodate): For decades, Air Greenland has been alone in providing scheduled services between Greenland and Denmark. This is set to change from 2015.
Given the very small population in Greenland and the country's still little-developed international economic and foreign trade relations, airlines' greed for entering the market on more than a seasonal charter basis has been sparse, leading to the notion that Air Greenland actually exercised a monopoly - which Air Greenland itself has vehemently demied.
-Contrary to public opinion, Air Greenland is actually exposed to competition every year. In our experience, competition can expand the market provided new operators bring with them a better distribution, or if they can grasp a market we either do not reach ourselves, or do not have the means to enter. This has been case for instance with Air Iceland/the Icelandair Group, Christian Keldsen, Air Greenland CCO told newstodate already in 2013.
Now Greenland's government has endorsed the applications by two new LCC start-ups Greenland Express and Aluu Airlines for launch of new Atlantic flights to Denmark as well as domestic feeder routes, with Greenland Express supposedly to get airborne already by May 11, 2015, and to be followed by Aluu Airlines at a later, yet undisclosed date.
In both cases the final approval rests with the Danish CAA, Trafikstyrelsen, that is currently handling the applications.
