Apr 17, 2015 (newstodate): Since July 1, 2014, all three state-owned international airports in Lithuania - Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga - have been under unified management as one Plc.
-In the short term, the benefit from this reorganization is that it allows us to develop the individual assets of each airport to the fullest, says Arijandas Sliupas, vice-minister of transport & communications.
-Vilnius Airport plays the role as the country's capital airport and has the largest potentials for the sustained build-up of a network of international connections by foreign as well as national carriers.
-In this respect it is well worth noticing that the catchment area of the airport already stretches beyond the borders of Lithuania, with growing volumes of transfer passengers coming in from neighboring Belarus as well Kaliningrad. These potentials are still only slightly tapped.
-Kaunas Airport was once an important cargo airport thriving on ex-China transfer cargo to Russia. These days are long gone. The airport is now establishing itself as an important MRO base as well as serving the surrounding industrial region. Finally, Palanga Airport has potentials for serving its region with international flights on a scale adapted to its specific requirements from a more limited catchment area.
-In the longer perspective, the corporatization of the three international airports is a prerequisite to future evaluations of potential ownership and management by foreign investors' concessions as a means of developing the airports within a broader perspective reflecting the fact that Lithuania is a small country with limited resources to ensure its role in a globalizing world, says Mr Arijandas.
