Mar 04, 2015 (newstodate): The days of Istanbul Ataturk Airport may be over within only a few years.
In 2014, the airport handled a total of 57 mio passengers, but capacity is now stretched over the ceiling, and few options remain for expansion while airlines are increasingly seeing delays and irregularities due to excessive traffic loads during peak periods.
Expectations are therefore that the airport will be closed in 2018 coinciding with the opening of a new mega-airport under construction that started in 2014 and is slated for completion of the first phase by 2018.
The new airport to be constructed in four phases is designed to a capacity to the handling of up to 150 mio passengers per year.
