Mar 12, 2015 (newstodate): Russia may soon have a new international airport, located in the Caucasus region.
At least the regional authorities have decided to start the process with ICAO for certification of Magas Airport, in Ingushetia, to handling of international traffic which will require a comprehensive reconstruction of the existing facilities.
Plans include building of a new passenger terminal, asphalting of the runway, a new taxiway system, and implementation of a new airfield lighting system.
The airport that was a Soviet air force base until 1992 is currently seeing only scheduled flights to Moscow as well as Hajj flight operations.
Russia has today about 300 airports with international status.
