Mar 26, 2015 (newstodate): Keeping eyes well open for opportunities but weighing benefits and risks is key to the development of the Latvian charter and ACMI carrier SmartLynx.
-Demand in the market for charter and ACMI operations is rising, presenting opportunities for growth for an airline like SmartLynx, but the real problem in 2015 is unfavorable exchange rates against the US dollars, says Aigars Jakovels, SmartLynx CFO.
-The high US dollar rate creates an unhealthy imbalance between a boom in sales and a deficit on the cost side, leading us to move cautiously when it comes to expansion or fresh business adventures.
-Basically, we are probably more cautious than some other carriers as we weigh the balance between benefits and risks on a very delicate scale. We for instance prefer to keep our fleet on the ground for maintenance during the slack winter season rather than engaging in projects outside Europe.
-We do constantly monitor the market to identify viable business opportunities in Asia and Africa during winter, but so far we have not found such sound and feasible project where benefits outweigh the risks involved.
-If we did find such a project we would definitely go for it, says Mr Jacovels.
