Mar 27, 2015 (newstodate): Plans for restarting direct flights by a Serbian carrier between Serbia and the USA has taken a final step forward towards fulfillment.
The two sides have now agreed on a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement following on the last year's final solution to all disputed provisions of the earlier 1977 Bilateral Air Service Agreement between the two states.
Pending ratification, the new air service agreement will thus allow Air Serbia to realize its long-nurtured hopes for opening up direct flights after 16 years of absence in the wake of the Balkan wars.
Air Serbia, boosted by its 49 percent ownership by Etihad, now plans for the airline to launch flights from Belgrade to New York, Chicago and Toronto by early 2016, using Etihad's Airbus A330 aircraft.
Serbia was downgraded from Category 1 in 2002, barring any service by a Serbia-registered aircraft carrier into North American airports, but the country finally regained its Category 1 status in June 2014.
