Mar 10, 2015 (newstodate): While Bombardier has finally managed to get the first CS300 aircraft into the air on February 27, 2015, the accolade around the new aircraft type has evaporated.
With the project was first launched in 2004, the CS series aircraft would significantly overtake competing aircraft including Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 Family on several crucial parameters, first of all fuel-efficiency promising a 20 percent lower fuel-burn.
But as the CS project run into sustained delays, both Boeing and Airbus have managed to launch their NG and neo versions of the well-tested existing aircraft, closing the initial technological gap favoring the CS aircraft.
As one recent proof, Qatar Airways has announced that they have abandoned plans for taking up to 20 of the CS-300 aircraft, sticking instead to Boeing and Airbus alternatives.
So far, Bombardier has booked 243 firm orders for the CS series aircraft, including 180 for the larger CS300 version.
Among the airlines set to receive the first CS300 aircraft is Latvia's airBaltic that will finally take over its first of 20 aircraft ordered in September 2016.
