Mar 03, 2015 (newstodate): Plans are underway for construction of a new airport to serve the expected influx of tourists to the natural resorts at the Crimean peninsula, now absorbed by Russia.
Today, most air traffic is handled by the international airport of Simferopol that is, however, hours' drive by road from the tourist spots on the southern part of the peninsula.
An existing alternative to Simferopol Airport is the military base at Belbek, near Sevastopol, that is however largely unsuitable and badly equipped for commercial traffic.
In 2014, Simferopol Airport with one 3,701m runway handled 2.8 mio passengers, and Belbek Airport only 50,000.
The airport re-opened for international traffic from July 19, 2014, after Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula
The issue of construction of a new Crimean airport will be included as a separate item in the draft federal program for the development of tourism in the Crimea.
In 2012, the Ukrainian government selected a proposal for the reconstruction of Simferopol Airport by the Dutch company Van den Akker Holding BV.
The proposal comprised the construction of a new passenger terminal, a new apron, a cargo terminal and facilities for servicing and maintenance of aircraft.
With the first phase of the project completed, the airport would have the capacity of serving up to four mio passengers and 10,000 tonnes of cargo.
