Mar 26, 2015 (newstodate): On the agenda at least since 2007, Finnair's Board has finally announced the decision to build a new cargo terminal at Helsinki Vanta Airport.
While the decision process was long drawn-out, the decision is however fast in implementation, with work to start already before the end of this month aiming at opening the new premises in 2017.
The new 35,000 sq m terminal - more than twice the size of the existing terminal - will include special cargo handling areas for pharmaceutical and life science products as well as perishable products including fish and seafood - all cargo segments to attain even greater priority by Finnair.
The new terminal will implement latest hi-tech systems and equipment including an automated storage system as well as a new ULD storage system.
Prior to the move to the new terminal, Finnair Cargo's ERP system will also be replaced by a new IT solution, with special emphasis on warehouse control features.
The location of the new terminal has been selected to ensure the shortest possible distance from the long-haul parking stands of Finnair's coming fleet of Airbus A350 XWB aircraft that will increase the cargo capacity of the carrier by 50 percent in 2020 when all aircraft so far ordered have been delivered.
