Feb 25, 2015 (newstodate): With a thaw in relations between USA and Cuba, prospects for a new development of Cuba's infrastructure are gaining fresh impetus as well.
As one surprising example, Russia is in talks with the United Arab Emirates on joint investment in setting up a major aviation hub in Cuba, according to Russian media.
Cuba currently has only one international airport serving Havana, but plans are to redevelop a former military air force base as the core of a new multi-modal hub connecting air, sea and rail transportation and offering new potentials for international airlines to set up routes to Cuba.
The planned hub would also become a transport hub for the Latin American region.
The focus is on harbor city Mariel, on the western part of Cuba 40 km south of Havana and well-positioned to serve the coming trade with USA and also the center of a new free-trade zone.
