Feb 16, 2015 (newstodate): One successful airport in northern Norway is Stavanger Lakselv Airport.
In January 2015, the airpost saw volumes up by 39.7 percent, y-o-y, to a total of 696 tonnes of cargo and mail, notably international cargo that was up by 147.5 percent to 442 tonnes.
The strong development is due to the launch of a once-weekly Airbus A330-200F freighter service by Qatar Airways Cargo connecting Stavanger and Doha from November 3, 2014, and Lufthansa Cargo's weekly call with a Boeing 777F at Stavanger starting from November 8, 2014.
The new cargo traffic is in line with the airport's visions of becoming the region's main airport serving the Norwegian oil and gas industries as well as the country's exporters of seafood.
The airport is, however, operated in cooperation with the Norwegian Ministry of Defence, and the Norwegian military has recently turned down a request for space to the handling of two An-124 freighter operations from Seoul, South Korea, to Stavanger Lakselv Airport in February, citing its needs for capacity to serve military purposes.
