Feb 06, 2015 (newstodate): ICAO is seeking ways to establish safe air corridors over Ukraine, avoiding the conflicts zones over Eastern Ukraine and the Crimea.
Since the fatal accident with the downing of the Malaysian Airlines passenger aircraft in July, 2014, commercial airlines have widely avoided flights through Ukrainian air space which causes longer flying times between Asia and Europe leading to higher costs, and loss of revenue by Ukraine from en-route charges.
If successful, new routes will pass over over parts of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
ICAO denies Russia's rights to take over control of the air space over the Crimea peninsula, but still wants commercial air traffic to avoid this area for obvious safety reasons.
