Feb 26, 2015 (newstodate): Fears of chaos ran high prior to the implementation in 2013 of EU Directive No 185 on cargo security screening. In effect, the transition went smoothly. Now a new scenario is arising..
-Doomesday visions were rampant back then, but we were obviously all overly pesssimistic. Noone reported any major problems, and things are running well. Now new challenges may be ahead, says Danish Freight Forwarders Association, chairman of the airfreight group and DHL Global Forwarding Strategic Customer Manager in Denmark.
-As a general observation, new requirements enforced in USA normally reach Europe three or fours years later. And in the USA there is today nothing like the concept of "known consignor", exempting shippers meeting the EU Directive 185 from having their export shipments screened on delivery at the gate to the airport. All shipments, excluding only few categories like DIP, must be screened 100 percent.
-We are convinced that this will be enforced Europe as well, in the form of a new EU directive binding on all EU member states. And this will lead to new costs to be tranferred to exporters.
-As always, there is nothing we can do against this. But it will certainly not make life easier for all of us in and around the airfreight forwarding business, says Mr Sorensen.
