Feb 18, 2015 (newstodate): Crimea's Simferopol Airport is benefiting from its recent integration with Russia.
According to Russian media, cargo volumes have risen five-fold since April 2014, with all cargo carried in passenger aircraft belly holds.
The cargo imports are coming in primarily on flights to Simferopol from Moscow and St PEtersburg, but increasingly new passenger flights are sestablished from other points in Russia including Krasnodar, Rostov-on-Don and other Russian regions.
Russian Post is also seeing a growth in shipments to Crimea of mail, parcels and documents, the media say.
However, IATA, Eurocontrol and other aviation bodies have not accepted Russia's take-over of the Crimean airport and airspace that remains closed for overflights by foreign airlines.
In 2014, the airport handled about three mio passengers.
